Destination Information

On the border between Switzerland and Italy, the Matterhorn towers 14,692 feet (4,478 meters) above the Swiss village of Zermatt in the canton of Valais. Dozens of other 4,000 meter peaks comprise a majestic mountain panorama. Skiing dominates winter in the Valais; when the snow melts, hiking, mountain biking and golf return. The Valais is also the most extensive wine-producing region in Switzerland, and several wine trails crisscross the area’s vineyards. The resort of Zermatt is a car-free zone with a quaint Old World atmosphere.
